About North Star Immigration Law

The law firm of North Star Immigration Law Inc. was founded to provide compassionate and skilled guidance through Canada’s complex immigration system. What began as Elizabeth Wozniak’s solo practice has grown into the largest and most experienced immigration law firm in Atlantic Canada.

The law firm traces its roots to the mid-2000s, when a shared commitment to client-centered immigration and refugee work brought together a small group of like-minded lawyers in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Lori Hill joined Liz’s practice in 2007, bringing with her a strong background in refugee advocacy and dedication to family reunification. Together, Liz and Lori focused on delivering principled and reliable legal support to individuals and families seeking stability and opportunity in Canada. The firm grew in 2012 with the addition of Cam MacLean, a well-muscled specialist with expertise in economic-class immigration.

Our practice evolved, expanding in both size and scope. In 2016, we became North Star Immigration Law Inc., a name reflecting our guiding role in family class and economic class immigration – both temporary and permanent – as well as refugee claims and admissibility issues.

Today, North Star Immigration Law is home to a committed team of 6 lawyers with experience in all areas of Canadian immigration and citizenship law. Sophie Chiasson, Elise Mercier, and Jayme Hagen round out our legal team. Lan Wang is our paralegal and office manager and Buki Shabiu is our legal assistant.

From individuals seeking permanent residence to employers navigating the LMIA process to students and professionals beginning new chapters, we are proud of the support and expertise we provide.

All of our lawyers are members in good standing of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society. We are also active members of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA), the Canadian Immigration Lawyers Association (CILA), and the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers (CARL). Our team has contributed to legal education by teaching immigration law at the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University, and one of our lawyers is a licensed Foreign Worker Recruiter in Nova Scotia and British Columbia.

At North Star, we believe in clear advice, ethical advocacy, and a client experience grounded in respect and care. Our legal team works collaboratively to ensure every client benefits from the full depth of our knowledge and commitment. We share a physical office (apart from our Montreal associate), and thrive off the organic energy and ferment created by experienced lawyers who are in constant contact with one another about their clients’ files.

We remain true to our founding values: skilled representation, a collaborative practice, and unwavering dedication to client success. We are honoured to serve as trusted representatives for individuals, families, and organizations navigating immigration and citizenship processes. And we believe Canada is stronger through fair immigration policies that are alive to both the needs of Canada and the needs of those who Canada should welcome or must protect.
